GRAHAME CALLS ON LONDON GOVERNMENT TO BACK BENEFITS INFORMATION CAMPAIGN

The UK Government is not doing enough to provide public relevant information to support people affected by the credit crunch, SNP MSP Christine Grahame has warned. Ms Grahame has called on Ministers in London to launch a public information campaign that will direct those in need of benefits and employment assistance to the agencies that can help them. Ms Grahame said:

“Constituents who are really beginning to feel the pain of the economic crisis are concerned that they do not have the information they need centrally to access benefits and other support. Many of them are facing unemployment for the first time and are completely unfamiliar with the benefits system.

“Ministers in London have a vested financial interest in ensuring Treasury funds stay buoyant, despite their eagerness to financially prop up the fat cat bankers that got us into this mess. It is incumbent on them to ensure that those who desperately need these benefits and access to support know where to find that help.

“I am calling on British Ministers to launch an extensive public information campaign that will point Borderers in the direction where they can get this support and help.

“As the economic downturn deepens the need for these services is bound to increase.”
