Council slammed over road sign delay

SNP MSP Christine Grahame has accused Scottish Borders Council of dragging its feet over delays to install road signage in Galashiels that notifies passing drivers that town centre businesses remain open for business as roadworks continue to divert traffic away from the centre. Ms Grahame was promised that new signage would be erected 3 weeks ago, yet work to commission the signs is still underway. Ms Grahame said:

“A number of local businesses have contacted me and are furious at the impression given to local passing trade that the town centre is closed. The Council have moved one sign, but positioned it in a place that will still go unnoticed by passing motorists.

“I was told that changes and new signs would be erected in a week after I contacted them at the start of August, yet nothing much has happened.

“These delays are costing local businesses money at a time when the local economy is struggling with recession. I have urged them again to move to remedy the situation and do more to help local businesses and the local Gala economy.”
